「おやゆび姫」その八を、訳しなおして。
足りない部分を、ＷＡＲＤの中で訳しました。
直訳にこだわった訳は、原文が持つ「単語」の意味が重要だからです。
例えば、最終章で花の精たちが、おやゆび姫（本文中のどこにも、彼女がおやゆび姫とはかいてないかもしれません、おチビちゃんは、仮に名付けただけで、自分の訳では「ちっぽけちゃん」になります。）に、名前を付けます。

マイアと言う名前は、ギリシア神話に出てくる名前でもあるし、星の場合は太陽のような「恒星」を意味します。
そんな意味で、直訳では「恒星」→「いつまでも輝く太陽」と訳しました。
しかし、候補はまだあるのです。
この言葉は、英語の五月「ＭＡＹ」に起因する言葉で、ツバメが再び北国デンマークへと旅する季節は多分「五月」なのです。
この名前を、アンデルセンが持ってきた意味などを考えると、それだけでどんぶり飯三杯は軽く行ける「おかず」なんです。
けさ早く、この雉ブログから完訳をＤＬするために、管理画面に入った時訪問者は私以外に四名。
アクセス回数が４０回以上、この記事の内容でそれほど上がるとは思えず、記事内容で、きっちりと読んだ方がいらっしゃるということを考えました。
その方のために、訳し直しを完成形に近い形で訳しました。
読みやすいと思います。
更に孫たちの年齢を考え、ルビを振ったり簡易な表現に書き直したりする作業がありますし、絵も描かなくてはいけない。
完成は焦っても始まらない。
わざわざ、読んでくれたどこかの誰かさんのために・・・・。

A short time before, the mole had dug a long passage under the earth, which led from the dwelling of the field-mouse to his own, and here she had permission to walk with Tiny whenever she liked.
すこしまえに、モグラおじさんは、彼の家と野ネズミおばさんの家をつなぐ、長いトンネルを掘ったばかりでした。
そして、おちびちゃんと野ネズミおばさんが、一緒に自由に行き来できることを、許していました。
But he warned them not to be alarmed at the sight of a dead bird which lay in the passage.
が、トンネルの中によこたわっている鳥の死骸を恐れないようにと注意しました。
It was a perfect bird, with a beak and feathers, and could not have been dead long, and was lying just where the mole had made his passage.
鳥は、くちばしから羽まで欠けてない完全な姿でした、そして死んでから間もない感じでモグラおじさんがトンネルを掘ったちょうどその場所に横たわっていました。
The mole took a piece of phosphorescent wood in his mouth, and it glittered like fire in the dark; then he went before them to light them through the long, dark passage.
もぐらおじさんは、燐光木をくちにくわえ、暗闇をたいまつのようにてらしました。
それからかれは、暗くて長いトンネルを２人の前を照らしながら進みました。
When they came to the spot where lay the dead bird, the mole pushed his broad nose through the ceiling, the earth gave way, so that there was a large hole, and the daylight shone into the passage.
モグラおじさんたちが、死んだ鳥が横たわっているところに差し掛かった時、かれは、そのひしゃげた鼻を、天井に向かって押し付けました。
すると、地面が割れて大きな穴が開き、日の光がトンネルの中に差し込んできたのです。
In the middle of the floor lay a dead swallow, his beautiful wings pulled close to his sides, his feet and his head drawn up under his feathers; the poor bird had evidently died of the cold.
日に光に照らされた鳥は、その美しい羽は折りたたまれ、足や頭を羽毛の中に縮こまらせていました。・・・どうやら、かわいそうなこの鳥は寒さのために死んだようです。
It made little Tiny very sad to see it, she did so love the little birds; all the summer they had sung and twittered for her so beautifully.
その姿を見たおちびちゃんは、その鳥が夏の間ずっとおちびちゃんを上等に楽しませてくれた小鳥で、ときに歌いときに呟いてくれた、あの小鳥だと気づきとても悲しくなってしまいました。
But the mole pushed it aside with his crooked legs, and said, "He will sing no more now.
なのにモグラおじさんは、彼の鋭い鉤爪で彼をトンネルん隅におしやり・・・・・。
「いまとなっては、こいつは歌うこともできやしないじゃｙないか」と（軽蔑するように）言いました。
How miserable it must be to be born a little bird! I am thankful that none of my children will ever be birds, for they can do nothing but cry, 'Tweet, tweet,' and always die of hunger in the winter."
「小鳥に生まれるってことは、うん！なんと不幸なことなんだろうなぁ」
「おいらの子供たちに、何もしないでピヨピヨ泣いてるだけの鳥たちみたいなやつが誰一人いないことにことに感謝しなくちゃな」
"Yes, you may well say that, as a clever man!" exclaimed the field-mouse, "What is the use of his twittering, for when winter comes he must either starve or be frozen to death. Still birds are very high bred."
「おお、そうですとも！」
「あなたは、なんとうまいことを言うんでしょう、（本当に）賢い人！」
野ネズミのおばさんは、叫びました。
「鳥たちのさえずりなんか、なんの役に立つんだろうね？お高くとまってても、冬が来たら飢え死にするか，凍え死にするのがおちなのにねぇ！」
Tiny said nothing; but when the two others had turned their backs on the bird,she stooped down and stroked aside the soft feathers which covered the head, and kissed the closed eyelids.
おちびちゃんは、その話には加わりませんでした。
モグラのおじさんと野ネズミのおばさんが、（話しながら）鳥の背中に回り込んだすきに、やわらかい羽毛に抱え込まれている（鳥の）頭に近づき、閉じられている瞼にそっとキスをしました。
"Perhaps this was the one who sang to me so sweetly in the summer," she said; "and how much pleasure it gave me, you dear, pretty bird."
「たぶん、この子は夏に私に歌いかけてうっとりさせてくれた子にちがいないわ」
「愛らしくって、かわいい鳥さん！本当にたくさんの喜びをいただけたわ！」
と（心の中で）言いました。
